GATOR GUAYABERA GUATEQUE

The Gator Guayabera Guateque (GGG) was started in 2004 and is the UF-AHA’s signature event. The annual gathering of hundreds of Gator alumni and friends is designed to celebrate UF’s rich Hispanic/Latino culture and raise funds for student scholarships, including the UF-AHA endowment, AHA/MFOS endowment, and Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures.

The GGG also showcases what is best about the University of Florida by presenting the Gran Caimán Award each year to a Hispanic/Latino Gator who has represented UF in a positive and successful manner; including contributions to the community, and their professional and/or academic field.

We are ready to celebrate after a 2-year hiatus. “¡Que comience la fiesta!” at the 2022 GGG. Enjoy an open bar and a sit-down dinner, and then dance the night away to the rhythm of our live band—The Miami Nites Band!

WHAT IS A GUATEQUE?

A guateque is a traditional social gathering, typically taking place in the Cuban countryside. It includes playing and singing Cuban folk songs (known as “puntos guajiros”) and dancing.

WHAT IS A GUAYABERA?

gwah-yah-be-rah

The guayabera is a traditional piece of menswear.  The shirt is distinguished by its four front pockets, and two vertical stripes of pleating and/or embroidery. Its widespread usage and distinctive appearance has made it the most iconic piece of clothing associated with the cultural life of Latin American and Caribbean populations worldwide. Despite this far-reaching popularity, the circumstances concerning the guayabera’s origin and stylistic evolution are indeterminate and widely dispersed across a number of sources.
