Class of 2025
Dr. Rafael and Mrs. J. Fe Padron de Angulo Scholarship 2024

My name is Daniela Hoyos and I am a junior in the College of Public Health and Health Professions pursuing a major in Public Health with minors in International Development and Humanitarian Assistance and Health Disparities in Society. As a Hispanic woman growing up in Miami, I witnessed how cultural and social factors intersect in our complex healthcare system in multi-generational communities. My lived experiences illuminated a number of barriers that correlate with quality and access to care; including differences in language, lack of health literacy, and significant economic disparities. I am grateful for the opportunities afforded to me to work toward minimizing these barriers in my community. At the University of Florida I have been granted the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary perspective on global health. I intend to continue cultivating my knowledge by pursuing a master’s degree in Global Health Policy and potentially a PhD in Global Health, and pursue a career as a Public Health Policy Advisor. Additionally, I feel called to work with Hispanic countries, especially Cuba and Colombia where my family is from. While I have been unable to visit Cuba, I have visited Colombia multiple times and feel a deep connection to both cultures. Using my educational background in international development and humanitarian assistance, I hope to help the people of these countries and other Hispanic countries where I know health disparities persist.
